Traditions Bloom in Thoughtfully Designed Shared Spaces

Each family has its own set of traditions, with most surfacing over the holidays. Maybe you travel to visit your loved ones, or you rent a cabin where everyone gathers to share stories, or you might cuddle up with your furry companion at home for a restful day. No matter where you are, a common thread with all holiday traditions is space. You remember the kitchen with the cherry blossom painting on the wall where you baked cookies with your grandparents each Thanksgiving and the coffee table in the living room that put your Christmas Village on full display.

The design of your favorite places can impact the memories you create in that shared space. Living rooms centered around a brick fireplace invite stories and caroling, and the right combination of carpeting and fixtures brings a sense of warmth and coziness. Our team keeps this at the forefront as we design dining areas, amenity rooms, and apartments for our senior living communities because we know how crucial elements of home can be for seniors and loved ones contemplating such a life-changing move.

Residents and caregivers want to feel that moving into a community won't mean they or their loved ones will have to give up life as they know it. They won't be trading their dining room for a stuffy cafeteria but an elegant, well-lit space with beautiful artwork on the walls that evoke a sense of calm as they enjoy a meal. And they can still walk their furry friend in the garden — only it might double as a pool deck. Such attention to detail helps foster a peaceful atmosphere while welcoming feelings of nostalgia.

For instance, the open bar at The Claiborne at Brickyard Crossing, with bright floral curtains over the window view into the pool, can bring back moments of hosting pool parties for friends or family.

The vintage drawings in the hair salon of MRC-Stevenson Oaks may resemble the interior of your parent's favorite barbershop.

In every design, our team imagines each resident's story and the environment each community wants to nurture.

As we prepare to close out another year to be with loved ones, continuing age-old traditions or starting new ones, we challenge you to reflect on where you've spent past holidays, how those spaces have influenced your family traditions, and what you may be able to do to continue those traditions through design. Studio 121 wishes you a very happy and healthy holiday and new year.
